Originally published in 1890 by The Century Co. (New York) as a ten-volume account of the life and times of Abraham Lincoln, this kindle edition includes all ten volumes fully edited with a linked comprehensive table of contents and a linked table of contents for each of the ten volumes. There are over 4,600 linked endnotes, consisting of the original footnotes and side notes (marginalia) found in the 10-volume hard copy. It also includes over 365 original illustrations and maps, all uniformly sized and edited.Authored by Lincoln's two private secretaries, this massive work has been described by Lincoln historians as a “most complete biography” (David H. Donald), and a “monumental work … [which] has living merit” (Benjamin P. Thomas). In his “A Shelf of Lincoln Books,” Paul M. Angle noted that it is “both biography and history, … [it] remains a book to reward both student and reader. For the former, there are documentary material and the first-hand testimony of authors who were themselves participants in the events of which they wrote; for the latter, a history of the Civil War unexcelled in comprehensiveness. This is one narrative that covers the whole great sweep of events--political developments, South as well as North; military campaigns, not only in the East but also in the often-neglected West and Southwest; the naval war; emancipation; military government and the problems it occasioned; foreign affairs; reconstruction; Lincoln's assassination and funeral. A fine chapter on Lincoln's fame serves as a conclusion. Not the least merit of [this work] is the large number of illustrations and maps which it contains.” Richard Cawardine has further noted that, as it is both a massive description of the war as much as a biography of the war's central figure, it is an “essential source, one characterized by scholarship and real candor.”More than a century after its publication, it remains an important record of the Civil War and a fair history of Lincoln.

At slightly under 4100 pages and spanning 10 Volumes, it took four years to complete. It is not a casual read to be sure. Although it can be a little on the dry side, it is a treasure filled with first hand accounts and loads of supporting documentation. A must have for any historian as well as for anyone who has anything more than a passing interest in Presidential history.
