Lincoln’s incredible ascent to power in a world of chaos is newly revealed in this “compelling, original, and elegantly written” (Michael Beschloss, New York Times bestselling author) third volume of the “magisterial” (The New York Times Book Review) Political Life of Abraham Lincoln series, following A Self-Made Man and Wrestling with His Angel. After a period of depression that he would ever find his way to greatness, Lincoln takes on the most powerful demagogue in the country, Stephen Douglas, in the debates for a senate seat. He sidelines the frontrunner William Seward, a former governor and senator for New York, to cinch the new Republican Party’s nomination. All the Powers of Earth is the political story of all time. Lincoln achieves the presidency by force of strategy, of political savvy and determination. This is Abraham Lincoln, who indisputably becomes the greatest president and moral leader in the nation’s history. But he must first build a new political party, brilliantly state the anti-slavery case and overcome shattering defeat to win the presidency. In the years of civil war to follow, he will show mightily that the nation was right to bet on him. He was its preserver, a politician of moral integrity. All the Powers of Earth is “as essential as any political biography is likely to be” and Sidney Bluementhal is “the definitive chronicler of Lincoln’s political career” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review).

Sydney Blumenthal the political advisor to the Clintons and other politicians is also a masterfully elegant author of the political biography of our sixteenth POTUS the inimitable Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) The first two volumes are A Self Made Man and Wrestling With His Angel. The author plans a five volume study of our only native born Kentuckian to become chief executive. In this fascinating volume the focus is on the 1850s when Lincoln emerged as the Republican Party leader, seizing the presidential nomination on the third ballot at the Chicago Convention and winning the presidency in 1860. Lincoln faces the growing threat of Southern secession and would serve with brilliance during the Civil War. He will always be known as the author of the Emancipation Proclamation issued on January 1,1863 Lincoln doesn't come into full focus in this volume until page 162. What Blumenthal does prior to that emergence is to set the scene Lincoln the Hamlet of Freedom would face as he took the helm of a ship of state badly foundering.Among the highlights of the 600 page study:a. The caning of Charles Sumner the liberal Republican favoring freedom for the slaves by South Carolina Congressman Preston Brooksb. The raid of John Brown on Harpers Ferry Arsenal in October 1859.c. The notorious Dred Scott Decision of the Supreme Court presided over by slave oligarchy favoring Roger Taney of Maryland.d. The series of debates between Stephen A. Douglas the Illinois Senator who supported popular sovereignty and the Kansas Nebraska Act against his challenger Abraham Lincoln.e. The divisive and decisive election for president in 1860. Many of the leading politicians and their schemes and tactics are made manifest in these eloquently penned pages.I learned a great deal about Lincoln and the politics of his perilous times in this excellent book. I can hardly wait until volume four appears! Highly recommended!
